A B O U T
Mokkō is an Amsterdam based interior design studio founded by Aad Bos. For businesses and private clients we design and create interiors and interior products, including acoustic art panels and furniture.
While we don't have a single fixed style, we do have a strong interest in Japanese aesthetics and love taking a contemporary approach to traditional Japanese design. We like combining big, bold statements with minimalist, clean lines and where appropriate, match contemporary art and design with rare vintage finds.
We believe a great interior leaves room for the mind to be involved and question things. It should strike the right balance between materials and in composition of objects. A space should inspire rather than impress.
The seed of the studio was planted during a trip to Japan. Mokkō means woodworking in Japanese. In a similar way as Japanese craftsmen, Mokkō embraces the beauty of natural imperfection and translates raw materials given by nature into tangible spaces and products.
Interior design projects
- Private residence, Amsterdam city centre (2018 - 2019)
A canal house apartment at Herengracht, Amsterdam, inspired by Japan. Taking a holistic approach, we transformed the main living room of an eclectic style canal house into a space for reflection and retreat inspired by Japanese aesthetics and culture. This was pursued by creating space, breaking with conventions and by celebrating the imperfections of natural materials, in Japan known as the concept of "wabi sabi". Most furniture and lighting objects are custom designed for the interior. The custom pieces were complemented with furniture crafted in Japan.
We guided and supervised the construction, furniture making and the execution of the project, working closely together with our network of local craftsmen and (Japanese) suppliers. A limited number of photos have been published online due to pending magazine publication. Photography by Ralph Reniers. To receive more project photos, please email email@example.com.
- Flagship retail store on Bali, Indonesia (2019)
For jewelry brand Wildthings, we helped designing their new flagship store on Bali, Indonesia. Under the creative direction of the founder we made renderings for visualization and technical drawings for construction of the interior of the store.
- Private residence South Amsterdam (2019 - ongoing)
Design and furnishing a family home in South Amsterdam, combining contemporary art and design with vintage design classics and rare finds. For custom pieces we take inspiration from brutalism and modernism, embracing big gestures and bold statements while taking a minimalist approach.

While traveling through Japan, founder Aad Bos got fascinated by the Japanese dedication to perfection and sense of aesthetics represented in every aspect of life in Japan. Not long thereafter, Aad decided to leave the corporate business environment and go back to his creative roots by starting a design studio of his own.
Aad followed courses in art, design and craft at the Edinburgh College of Art, Morley College London and the Delft University of Technology. Before founding Mokkō, Aad worked as a corporate lawyer for 5 years in Istanbul, London and Amsterdam, while spending his spare time on art, craft and design.
