A B O U T
Mokkō is an Amsterdam based design studio for interiors, furniture and acoustic art panels, founded by autodidact designer Aad Bos. Our work is inspired by Japanese aesthetics and woodcraft. Hence the name Mokkō, meaning woodworking in Japanese.
For private clients and businesses we create interiors, furniture and acoustic art panels, striving to create pleasing and inspiring- rather than impressing interiors and products. For the completion of our interior projects we work together with a selection of top quality craftsmen, contractors and suppliers.
Our design represents a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese aesthetics and is characterized by a clean and modest appearance with a strong character and presence.
Interior design projects
- Private residence interior at Herengracht, Amsterdam (2018 - 2019)
For a private client we designed and created a serene living room inspired by Japanese aesthetics and culture. Taking a holistic approach and starting with an empty space, we designed the interior, as well as most of the furniture and objects. We guided and supervised the construction, furniture making and the execution of the project, working closely together with our network of local craftsmen and (Japanese) suppliers. Completion: July 2019. Have a look on our Instagram account Mokkoamsterdam for the first photos.
- Flagship retail store on Bali, Indonesia (2019)
For jewelry brand Wildthings, we helped designing their new flagship store on Bali, Indonesia. Under the creative direction of the founder we made renderings for visualization and technical drawings for construction of the interior of the store. While traveling through Japan, founder Aad Bos got fascinated by the Japanese dedication to perfection and sense of aesthetics represented in every aspect of life in Japan. Not long thereafter, Aad decided to leave the corporate business environment and go back to his creative roots by starting a design studio of his own.
Aad followed courses in art, design and craft at the Edinburgh College of Art, Morley College London and the Delft University of Technology. Before founding Mokkō, Aad worked as a corporate lawyer for 5 years in Istanbul, London and Amsterdam, while spending his spare time on art, craft and design.
